WHAT IS BS6? HOW IS IT GOING TO AFFECT THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY OF INDIA?
Bharat
Stage Emission (BSE) introduced in the year 2000 by the Central Pollution
Control Board under the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to control
the air pollution cause by the internal combustion engine in a vehicle .
What Is BS6?
Bharat
stage 6 (BS6) is the sixth mandate for vehicle emission which is made to fight
the air pollution problem in India and will be in effect from 1 st april 2020 . This norm is much more restrictive and
will be very helpful for India in fighting the sever problem of air pollution .
The emission standards of India now will same as that of America and Britain
.
What
is the difference between BS6 and BS4?
1) New fuel will be available which will
be of BS6 complain to run the BS6 standard engine , any engine of BS6 norms
using BS4 fuel will not adhere to the
new standards .
2) The main difference between the BS6 and BS4 is that the BS6 fuel contains 5
times less sulphur than the BS4 fuel . Due to this change the NOx emission will
drop by 70% in diesel cars and by 25% in
petrol cars.
3) OBD ( Onboard Diagnostics) will be
made mandatory for all the cars
4) DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter ) and SCR ( Selective Catalytic Reduction) is
mandatory for diesel engines .
Now many of you might be thinking
that what will happen if I will put BS6 fuel in the BS4 standard car ?
If you own a
petrol car then there will be no difference or damage to your car as the there
is very less difference between the BS6 petrol and BS4 petrol . On the other
hand if you own a diesel car then you wont be able to run BS6 diesel in a BS4
diesel car because of less sulphur content in BS6 fuel , now the question is what does sulphur do ?
In diesel engine the fuel gets vaporized from the fuel injector for the combustion
and sulpur acts as a lubrication in the fuel injector now with less sulphur
content the lubrication will decrease and it will damage the fuel injector . In the BS6 standards cars many modifications
are done to run the BS6 fuel in it .
Now
what will happen if we reverse the question , what will happen if we put BS4
fuel in a BS6 engine? Again,
if you have a petrol car you need not to worry about anything but if you own a
diesel car you may get in trouble by doing so because the BS6 diesel engines
comes with many modifications to adhere to the change in fuel . Now, if you use
BS4 fuel then the excess of sulphur can clog the Diesel Particulate Filter
(DPF)
Will it affect the performace ?
Lowering the
environmental emission will make the car engine more cleaner . Clean engines
will have slow combustion process will will lower the performance of the car .
The car makers are working to compensate the low performace by doing modification
in the drive train , exhaust and various other places to get that fill the gap which
is created in the performace of the car.
It's really informative, generally nobody knows about the difference between BS4 and BS6.
